Freements

Design / Development
Project Overview
Freements was a passion project born from the question, "How might we make recreating a home fermentation project easier?" The goal was to create a controlled environment for consistent and reliable fermentation projects. Collaborating with a friend on the hardware component, we aimed to present our prototype at the 2019 Fermentation Festival in Austin, TX. The project addressed three main problems: difficulty in following project schedules, the perceived complexity of fermentation, and the challenge of controlling the fermentation environment.
My Contributions
As the lead designer and developer for this project, I took on multiple roles:
  • Designed and built mobile application using React Native
  • Created intuitive interface for tracking, monitoring, and sharing fermentation projects
  • Developed system for managing multiple projects within each Box
  • Balanced design aesthetics with practical implementation
Our efforts culminated in a successful presentation at the 2019 Fermentation Festival in Austin, TX. We showcased our prototype, engaged with our target user groups, and received overwhelmingly positive feedback. The project garnered interest from various stakeholders, including restaurateurs interested in purchasing the final product and fellow designers and developers eager to join the project.

This experience provided valuable insights beyond the technical aspects of the project. Working on a team with friends presented unique challenges but ultimately proved to be the most rewarding part of the journey. The shared excitement and collaborative spirit helped overcome obstacles and made the celebration of our achievements at the festival particularly meaningful. Additionally, engaging in this passion project alongside my regular work reinvigorated my enthusiasm for design and development. It served as a reminder of the joy and innovation that can come from pursuing creative ideas outside of day-to-day professional responsibilities.
